One of the most reliable medium-class cars, the Volga does not need special recommendations. The mere fact of its traditional employment for taxi service in the USSR and many other countries proves convincingly the universal acknowledgement of its economic performance, strength and durability. All these advantages were not only fully inherited by the new Volga model, GAZ-3102, but were further developed in it.
Made to last
The service life of the Volga GAZ-24, which preceded the new model, was equivalent to 250,000 km. In many cases that car clocked 400,000 to 600,000 km without overhaul, and some units even logged a million km. Is it the limit of reliability? Of course, not, and the Volga GAZ-3102, designed to run 350,000 km, is a fine proof of that. And there is every reason to believe that it will break all the records of its predecessor.
The designers paid particular attention to ensuring equal strength of all the car's components to make it last longer. As a result, the life of the engine, the gearbox and the front suspension was extended considerably. The new body is even stronger than that of the GAZ-24, and its resistance to corrosion has also increased.
Safety above all
The design of the GAZ-3102 includes a complete set of active and passive safety elements called for by international standards.
Disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear ones. Split hydraulic drive with liquid pressure control in the rear cylinders for skidding- free braking.Headlights with halogen lamps, washers and wipers. Fog lights on the rear. Front seats with comfortable headrests. Safety belts on all seats. Electrically heated rear window. Fuel tank behind the rear seat back, a place best protected from mechanical damage.
Long-distance touring in comfort
The comfort of the new Volga is in its modern seats upholstered in high quality materials, in a low noise level in the cab, in the powerful heating and ventilation system, and in the high-class stereo radio/player. The standard equipment also includes a clock, a cigarette lighter and ash trays in the rear doors. The non-flashing instrument glasses and two multifunctional levers on the steering column for controlling the turn indicators, dim and distance light and the three-speed windscreen washer and wiper also mean a good deal of driver comfort.
Attention long-distance touring enthusiasts: the trunk of the Volga is now much roomier because the fuel tank is fitted behind the rear seat back and the spare wheel beneath the trunk floor (this is also important for taxi owners). The comparatively high road clearance and strong suspension of the Volga will enable you to travel along roads impassable by most two-wheel-drive cars. And if you find yourself on the road at night you can recline the front seat backs and have a good rest right in the car.The Volga feels at home both in a large city and on a long road, in the Arctic with its biting frosts and in the sunbaked Sahara desert. This is not accidental, for its homeland is one-sixth of the globe's hard surface with an extremely wide range of geographic conditions.
The "clean" engine: lower fuel consumption, higher output, longer life
The GAZ-3102 is powered by a carburettor type engine with a forechamber. The process of combustion in such an engine runs three or four times faster, and the fuel mixture burns out completely. As a result, the content of toxic agents in the exhaust gases is reduced even without using auxiliary devices such as cathalytic neutralisers, electronic and other systems and meets modern international standards.
Compared with that of the GAZ-24, the forechamber engine of the GAZ-3102 consumes 10 per cent less fuel and is higher powered than that of the GAZ-24. As a result of improvements in the design and technology of production of the cylinder block, camshaft and some other parts of the engine, its life is 25 per cent longer than that of the previous model's engine.
